Wind guidance by fishing style

Shore / bank

Use heavier weights or lures, fish the wind-blown bank where bait gathers, and keep your rod tip low to cut line bow. Too windy at roughly 25 mph sustained.

Small boat

A drift sock or anchor helps above 10 mph. Above 15 mph on open water, waves and boat control become the problem. Too windy at roughly 20 mph or 30 mph gusts.

Kayak

The most wind-sensitive. Plan routes along a lee shore, paddle upwind first. Rough above 12 mph, too windy at roughly 15 mph or 20 mph gusts.

Fly fishing

Casting accuracy drops quickly above 10–12 mph. Shorten the leader, use heavier lines and cast with the wind on your non-casting side. Too windy at roughly 18 mph.

Lake

Wind speed plus fetch decides wave height. Long open stretches get rough at lower speeds than coves and small reservoirs. Wind can stack warm surface water and bait on the downwind shore.

Inshore / coastal

Wind against tide builds short, steep chop — especially in inlets and passes. Our thresholds don’t model tides or open water; check the NWS marine forecast and tide tables before running inlets.

Frequently asked questions

Is it too windy to fish today?

Enter your ZIP to see the current wind and gusts and an hour-by-hour check for shore, boat, kayak and fly fishing against our thresholds, plus the calmest window today and tomorrow.

What is the best wind speed for fishing?

Many anglers like a light 5–10 mph breeze: the chop breaks up light, pushes bait toward wind-blown banks and hides your line. Dead calm can make fish wary in clear water; above about 15 mph boat control and casting get hard.

How windy is too windy to fish from shore?

Shore anglers can usually handle more wind than boaters — we flag about 25 mph sustained or 35 mph gusts as too windy. Casting into the wind and keeping bottom contact get hard well before that.

How windy is too windy for kayak fishing?

We flag kayaks as too windy at about 15 mph sustained or 20 mph gusts, and rough above 12 mph. Wind against current or tide builds steep waves fast — paddle into the wind first so the trip home is downwind.

Is it too windy to fish on a lake?

On big lakes the distance the wind blows over open water (fetch) matters as much as speed: a 15 mph wind down a long lake builds much bigger waves than on a small pond. Fish the sheltered (upwind) shore or a cove when it’s rough.

Do these wind limits keep me safe?

No — they are heuristics for fishing comfort on sheltered water. Always follow NWS small-craft advisories, wear a PFD, and use your own judgement for your boat and experience.
